Developer Steven Troughton-Smith found out that iOS applications can installed on the new Apple TV. You only need to slightly modify the applications to identify them as Apple TV-compatible. Of course, Steven’s discovery is an important step in developers’ quest to run applications on the device, but the applications are not yet usable, as the Apple TV doesn’t have any application launcher that would be required for an app to function.

DevTeam successfully jailbreaked new iOS 4. They updated jailbreak utility redsn0w to version 0.9.5b5-3. Supported devices are iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G (not MC). New redsn0w is also able to hacktivate iOS 4.0 for iPhone3G.

You can download redsn0w 0.9.5b5-3 here:

Hacker msftguy created unofficial PwnageTool which allows to upgrade to the pre-release of iOS 4.0 GM while keeping your jailbreak and old baseband.

This is not an official release by Devteam, so we recommend to wait for the final versions of both iOS 4.0 and PwnageTool.

For the advanced users who want to experiment here is a link.

Msftguy also provided a video:

The application is free but you can also buy an extension pack (costs $2.99) which will add new features, such as:

  • History: keep the history of all copied sentences / words / numbers;
  • Lookup: find online matches for phone numbers and words, using Google Search, Wikipedia, Dictionary, and Google Translate;
  • Tweet: send selected text through a Twitter client installed on your iPhone (currently support Tweetie, Twitterific, Twittelator and TwitterFon).

We found this utility quite useful. It can be installed via Cydia on a jailbreaked iPhone (iPod Touch).

jailbreak

The latest statistics provided by PinchMedia show that, despite the statements from Apple’s official website, the phenomenon of Jailbreak is increasing.

In a single week in fact, it has gone from 8% to 8,43%. This is a small percentage which probably expresses the disappointment of users faced with some decisions of Apple, such as the refusal of the application Google Voice.

gv_mobile

Yesterday Apple blocked an official Google Voice app from the App Store; meanwhile, they also kicked out unofficial versions, f.e. GV Mobile. But you can still get GV Mobile for free… via Cydia.

The developer of GV Mobile has decided to go ahead and release GV Mobile for free rather than let his work go to waste. You have to jailbreak iPhone to get this app.

Wallpaper Labeler (AppStore link) and gCalWall Lite (AppStore link) let you add appointments and notes to the home screen. With Wallpaper Labeler, you can enter any text you want to your wallpaper, so you can leave yourself (or whoever finds your phone) notes. The other app, gCalWall, pulls down upcoming appointments from your default Google Calendar and splays them all over your home screen. You have to update it manually, which is kind of a drag, but the dev says that iPhone API won’t allow for automatic updating. Both apps are free 🙂

In the past you could only use Intelliscreen paid app on a jailbreaked iPhone.

xgps

xGPS uses Google’s map data and driving directions, adding a real-time navigation readout and a voice engine. You can also select a map area to download ahead of time, just in case you expect to lose your data connection during the drive. There is also a night mode for those who hate bright white screen shining at night.

xGPS without vocalization in already available in Cydia for jailbreaked iPhones. The new version 1.2 will be ready in a week or so.

Sounds like one more reason to jailbreak. Watch the video, how this nice app works:

This is one more solution to add copy/paste functionality to iPhone. Couple days ago we wrote about Clippy. This one is called hClipboard. Avaliable via Cydia (bigboss repository) for jailbreaked iPhones.

Here is a quick tutorial how to use it:

After installing just enable it in Settings → General → Keyboard → International.

Copy:

When the keyboard appears, switch to ℏClipboard by clicking the International button (the Globe) repeatedly. Then hit the Copy button. The entire content of the text field should now appear in the top of the clipboard.

To select portion of a text:
