Jailbreak iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

May be soon we will jailbreak our devices with a new tool from George Hotz (better known as Geohot) called Rubyra1n. On March 27, 2010 George Hotz registered two domains limera1n.com and blackra1n.com, another jailbreak tool Hotz released last year. The new rubyra1n, however, doesn’t share the same data with limera1n.com — an app released in October to jailbreak iOS 4.1. Geohot doesn’t comment these rumors anyhow, but we, obviously, wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him coming out with his own iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak for all devices.

Next iPhone/iPod/iPad firmare iOS 4.2 is due out soon. What can we expect in terms of jailbreaking 4.2?

Limera1n exploit for 4.2 in most cases is a tethered jailbreak. That means if you have to reboot your device, it will show a “connect to itunes” logo until you run the jailbreak software again.

• iPhone 3G – will run 4.2 untethered. Redsn0w will be updated.
• iPhone 3GS – old bootrom will run 4.2 untethered if done via Pwnagetool while updating from 4.1. Otherwise it will be tethered.
• iPhone 4 – tethered
• iPod 2G – untethered.
• iPod Touch 3G, iPod Touch 4G – tethered
• iPad – tethered.

Tethered jailbreak isn’t that bad for iPads and iPods. But if something happens and your iphone reboots while you’re away from your computer, you cant use the device until you get home and run some tool on your computer again.

We suggest not updating until new expoit will be implemented in new utility.

The community is working on a solution to this to either make the jailbreak untethered or at least semi-tethered. Semi-tethered means the device will at least reboot, but unjailbroken while on the road until you return to your computer.

MobileTerminal is a terminal emulator application for the iPad and iPhone. The version of MobileTerminal that is available in Cydia doesn’t work with iPhone iOS 4.x. However there are beta versions that do work, but aren’t on Cydia because they are still in beta stages. This tutorial will show you step-by-step how to install MobileTerminal on iPhone with iOS 4.x (tutorial for iPad is here). If you have old version of MobileTerminal installed – uninstall it in Cydia (Search – MobileTerminal – Remove).

First of all you need to jailbreak your iPhone. If you have not done it already here is an easy tutorial: how to jailbreak iOS 4.0-4.1 on iPhone using Limera1n. After you successfully jailbreaked iPhone:

These are instructions on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS (all bootroms) or iPhone 4 using Limera1n for Mac OS X. Limera1n supports iOS 4.0, iOS 4.0.1, iOS 4.0.2 and iOS 4.1. Use the same steps to jailbreak iPod Touch 4G and iPod Touch 3G and even iPad. You can find the Windows version of this tutorial here.

Remember: Do not update to iOS 4.1 if you need the unlock. Ultrasn0w does not support that baseband yet.

Today the Chronic Dev-Team released their jailbreak utility called Greenpois0n. There are currently two versions – for Windows and for Linux users. The team is working on a Mac version, so it will be released soon. Greenpois0n supports only firmware iOS 4.1, so use Limera1n if you want to jailbreak iOS 4.0, iOS 4.0.1 or iOS 4.0.2.

Remember: Do not update to iOS 4.1 if you need the unlock. Ultrasn0w does not support that baseband yet.

Hackers used the bootrom exploit found by Geohot and used in limera1n.

RedSn0w 0.9.6 b1 for Mac OS X was released a while ago. Today DevTeam created a version for Windows users. RedSn0w 0.9.6 b1 can jailbreak iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.1 running on iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G.

You can download it here.

Redsn0w is easy to use:

1. Download firmware here.
2. Launch redsn0w 0.9.6 b1
3. Select your stock 4.1 or 4.0 ipsw (you’ve already used this to update your device to 4.1 or 4.0)
4. Select “Install Cydia” and any of the other options shown above, then click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.

This is still beta, so there might be some problems:

Any Windows users seeing “Waiting for reboot” for too long (more than 20 seconds or so), please try “shaking” the JB process by unplugging then replugging your USB cable (while letting redsn0w continue to run). Also, try using a USB port “closer” to your computer (as opposed to on your monitor or behind another hub).

As usual DevTeam reminds us:

IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W

That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever).

DevTeam recently released new version of redsn0w to jailbreak iOS 4.1. New RedSn0w 0.9.6 b1 supports iOS 4.0 and iOS 4.1 running on iPhone 3G or iPod touch 2G.

There is only Mac OS X x86 version, that you can download here.

You cannot use JailBreakMe method to jailbreak and unlock iOS 4.0.2 on iPhone 3G. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G using redsn0w. Here are the instructions:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.2). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.
• If you need a carrier unlock – install ultrasn0w in Cydia (add repository http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com). For T-Mobile in the USA remember to turn off 3G mode in Settings→General→Network.

Only a few days passed since Dev Team has confirmed that Comex will try to jailbreak iOS 4.1, using other exploit. However, according to the response received on Twitter, it became known that Comex may not take part in the new iOS 4.x jailbreak.

Comex replied to the message on Twitter in such a way: “ariif, the next jailbreak might not be from me :)”.

Of course, it does not mean that Comex leaves the scene and would not take part in jailbreaking as Geohot, most likely it is only this version he isn’t planning to jailbreak. Nevertheless the smile in his reply certainly means something good…
