WhiteD00r WhiteD00r custom iOS 4.2.1 firmware for iPhone 2G and iPod touch 1G released

Apple stopped to support original iPhone 2G and iPod touch 1G starting from iOS 4.0. Their decision was justified because of the low RAM and sow CPU in these first-gen devices released back in 2007.

iPhone jailbreak community has now come up with a mod, which brings the complete look and feel of iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone 2G, 3G and iPod touch 1G and 2G. The mod is basically based on the iPhone OS 3.1.3, to replicate the experience of iOS 4 on the first and second generation iPhone and iPod touch.

This custom firmware, named WhiteD00r, includes everything from iOS 4.x: wallpapers, new semi transparent dock (and UI), backgrounds, all new icons from iOS 4.x, Voice Control, multitasking, video recording, and more. Full list of features can be found here.

Moreover WhiteD00r was also relased for iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G. Regular iOS 4.х works really slow, on these devices, while modified 3.1.3 has much more chances.

Here is a video of it in action:

Mike Pan has successfully modified his iPhone 3GS and now it can record HD video at 1080x800px with 30 frames per second and up to 20Mbps! The original ability of this handset is 640x480px at 3 Mbps. Mike used the non-standard resolution so the video could be kept at the right aspect ratio.

So here is a short instruction how to enable HD-video recording on your iPhone 3GS with firmware 4.1 (as other firmwares haven’t been tested yet):

  1. Download HDVideo3GS.zip.
  2. Jailbreak your device and install SSH.
  3. Copy N88AP.plist to /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/
  4. Copy the 3 other plist-files to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Celestial.framework/N88/
  5. Reboot your iPhone 3GS

Some features:

  • Low light capability cannot be enhanced, so dark areas will still have grains.
  • In case you want to send the recorded HD-video to YouTube in its original quality, use Pixelpipe from the App Store.
  • The maximum shutter duration has been increased so now you can take photos even in dark areas, but a steady surface or tripod is highly recommended.

Mike promises to release an app in cydia so that the procedure could be even simpler. For those who’d like to understand how he did it, he posted a detailed instruction here.

Jay Freeman, better known as Saurik, the creator of Cydia, was interviewed by the home radio Make It Work. He speaks about the history and the future of the iPhone jailbreak.

saurik interview 400x222 Saurik talks about the iPhone jailbreak

Saurik describes the origins of Jailbreak and Unlock for the very first model of the iPhone. Jay explains that initially there were two important things to do with the iPhone 2G -- to use other carrier than AT&T and to install any application.

He continues discussing the main applications from Cydia. Cycorder was the first to allow video recording, and Winterboard was the only one that allowed users to change the graphical interface of the iPhone. He also speaks about Comex, the hacker who is currently working with the Dev Team for releasing and Unlock for the iPhone 4. According to Saurik the tool is still not ready to be released to the public due to severe bugs in the code. Here the second part:

This application is developed by Jay Freeman, the creator of the Cydia. Veency is a free app that allows iPhone owners to remotely control their iPhone from PC or Mac desktop via a VNC client.

Here are some of the features:

  • Launch applications on your iPhone
  • Reply to emails, text messages, and more
  • Rearrange icons
  • Lock/Unlock your iPhone
  • Browse through Photos and Contacts

Of course you cannot do two finger gestures with this app. All other actions can be done with the click of your mouse. The only area in which Veency fails tragically at is when opening any video recording application on the iPhone.

This application is avaliable for jailbreaked iPhones via Cydia installer.

Be sure to restart your iPhone after installing Veency and connect to the server using a Wi-Fi connection. We recommend using UltraVNC or TightVNC to connect your Windows desktop. If you’re using a Mac, we recommend Chicken VNC.
