android market

This week Google has released a new version of its client app for Android Market, which will work on any smartphone running Android OS 1.6 or higher.

The company aims to facilitate the process of discovering new software and its purchase. That’s why new Android Market will have a Cover Flow-like style of app listings and include new categories like Widgets and Live Wallpapers, as currently the catalog is filled pretty much with these kinds of software. Besides that, app pages will now have more info and links to related content.

Some changes were made to the policy of software returns. If earlier user could take his money back in case he didn’t like the app he bought within 24 hours, now this time is shortened to 15 minutes.

As the number of Android devices continues to grow and it becomes hard for developers to make their apps hardware compatible with as many existing handsets as possible, Google presents its new solution:

“To make it easier for developers to distribute and manage their products, we will introduce support for device targeting based on screen sizes and densities, as well as on GL texture compression formats.”

Another important feature of new Android Market is a new limitation of app file size, which is now extended to 50 MB (earlier it was 25 MB). This is still 40 times smaller than the current limitation for iOS apps (2GB). This can be explained by the fact that iOS apps can be downloaded not only via its mobile client (like apps for Android), but also via iTunes, that can be connected to the Internet in any possible way and thus capable to download such amounts of information. Nevertheless, some developers pass this limitation by offering tiny apps for Android that can download necessary files (like music, textures, video) of any size after its purchase.

However, Google’s attempts to create a rival to an App Store still are not successful as they can be. AppleInsider has studied the subject and revealed that the Android’s openness has led to a number of cases when popular titles like Radiant were cracked to be used as illegal copies by “97% of players in Asia, 70% in Europe and 43% in North America”. That’s why most of developers like Rovio (which created Angry Birds) offer free versions of their apps to earn money from showing the ads. But that kind of income is not as profitable as offering paid apps, which makes iOS more attractive for developers than Android.

It was also noted that Android Market offers poor security for users, though this situation can be changed by cleaning up the store. At least, that was what the developer of DoubleTwist Jon Lech Johansen advised Google more than a half a year ago, but the company has not still made any steps in that direction.

FixFacebookforiPhone3.2Problem 200x300 How to Fix Facebook for iPhone 3.2Facebook for iPhone 3.2 was released last night and now it supports the newly created function “Places”, background downloading of photos and videos in iOS 4, together with other visual enhancements, such as “pull-to-refresh” for the iPhone. However, for many users, this new version was mostly broken, with the following error “Unable to load the page” on most of its pages. Yes, and if you try to uninstall and reinstall the application, it simply refuses to “Log in”.

As it turned out, this problem occurs on jailbroken iPhones for those users who have installed the application BiteSMS from Cydia. The new Facebook application for iPhone 3.2 is not compatible with the current version of BiteSMS. So if you have installed this application, removing it from Cydia, you’ll solve this problem, at least it really helped some of the users.

We hope that the new version of BiteSMS will be released pretty soon and will be compatible with this new version of Facebook for iPhone.

Clippy is an iPhone addition from Cydia for copy/paste functionality. It was updated to version 0.96-1. Many issues are resolved and a lot of bugs fixed. Among these are: the ability to copy text from Safari, the ability to copy text from messages or biteSMS and Fix for the Mail application, many different crashes, etc.

Instructions:

  • Press-and-hold on list items to invoke Clippy on static text
  • Press-and-hold on the keyboard’s “123″ button to invoke Clippy on editable text
  • Tap-pause-and-drag to highlight portions of editable text (except in web pages)

Install from Cydia on a jailbreaked iPhone or iPod Touch.

Here are several photos that show how Clippy works:

ima1 ImaSafari: show or hide images in webpages [Cydia] ima2 ImaSafari: show or hide images in webpages [Cydia]

ImaSafari allows iPhone users to turn off image downloading in Safari browser. This is very useful for GRPS, EGDE and 3G connectins. First of all webpages will be downloaded faster. Second – you will save money if you pay for inernet traffic.

This utility is avaliable for free via Cydia (for jailbreaked iPhones only).

To turn images on or off just install this software and go to Settings – Safari.

201 New firmware 2.0.1

The main purpose is bug fixing. Many applications work faster. Here is the list of changes:

  • Drag an app icon across multiple pages in one motion, rather than having to drag it, drop it, pick it up again and drag it over to next page, and repeat.
  • Contacts are now more responsive.
  • Backup is much faster.
  • Apple may have changed the calibration of the iPhone’s reception “bars” while connected to a 3G network to reflect a stronger signal than before.
  • Keypad loads quicker.
  • Screen rotation in Safari appears to be smoother.
  • Some apps may ask to be updated after the firmware upgrade.
  • SMS typing faster.
  • Google Apps works faster.
  • Netshare still works (for those who use it).
  • Works with iPod.
  • Multimedia content is kept after update.
  • No Support from Pwnage and WinPwn. If you update you’ll loose unlock and jailbreak.

iphone 3g tethering Get internet on a desktop or notebook through IPhone 3G

Thanks to Dev Team and the porting work of Jay Freeman as well as the authors of 3Proxy, it is now possible to “tether” your iPhone 3G and use its Internet connection on your laptop.

Warning – Tethering your iPhone is against the iPhone data plan terms. AT&T could slap you with huge fees if you overuse this. I recommend only using it during emergencies.

Here is a basic plan (by the way, this should work for old IPhone also):

  • Jailbreak your iPhone 3G
  • Install 3Proxy and Terminal
  • Create an ad-hoc Wi-fi network using your laptop
  • Join the network with your iPhone
  • Find the iPhone’s IP address
  • Open Terminal and run the proxy program
  • Open Safari on your iPhone and open a web page
  • Configure your browser to use the proxy

Later we’ll discuss it with more details.

Step 1: Jailbreak your iPhone

Just download PWNageTool 2.0. Run it and follow the instructions. Make sure to add Cydia, when asked.

Step 2: Install 3Proxy and Terminal

During the jailbreak, Cydia should have appeared on one of your app pages: use it and let Cydia load and self-update.

Then head to Install, All Packages, then find MobileTerminal and 3Proxy (3Proxy is at the bottom). Install both and hit your Home button. Your phone will restart and you’ll see Terminal installed on your home screen. 3Proxy isn’t a GUI app and as such won’t have an icon.

Step 3: Create an ad-hoc Wifi network using your laptop

Using whatever wireless software suite you have, create an ad-hoc network. On a Mac it’s in the Airport menu, under “Create network…”. Name it something inconspicuous. I called mine “baladoux”. On your iPhone, join the ad-hoc network.

Step 4: Find your iPhone’s IP address

Then, hit the blue arrow next to it, and wait for your IP address to show up:

Memorize (or write down) this IP address. You will need it later.

Step 5: Open Terminal and run the proxy program

Simple enough. Open Terminal, type “socks” and hit return.

Nothing will appear to happen, but the SOCKS server will be running. You can hit the home button to push Terminal to the background (remember to terminate it later, by switching back to Terminal and holding the Home button until it closes).

Step 6: Open Safari on the iPhone and open a web page

Any page will do. I recommend http://jailbreak-iphone.ru

This step is important. The page will take a while to load. When Safari realizes it can’t get to the Internet using the ad-hoc Wifi, it will do some internal magic to switch back to 3G for Internet while still on your ad-hoc network. That lets the proxy do its thing.

Step 7: Configure your browser

In Firefox, head to Preferences, and under Advanced, Network, hit Settings:

Then, fill in the iPhone’s IP address (which you memorized earlier) into the SOCKS Host field, and put 1080 as the port number. Make sure all other proxy fields are blank and/or 0 as shown:

Then, since the proxy doesn’t forward DNS, you will also have to change an advanced option in Firefox. In the Firefox URL bar, enter “about:config” and hit Enter

In Filter, type “socks” and then double-click “network.proxy.socks_remote_dns” to make its value “true”.

That should be all you need! Firefox should be able to browse the Internet through your iPhone’s 3G connection.

Tethering costs a lot of battery life on the iPhone so make sure you have it plugged in. When you’re done, make sure to quit Terminal by opening it back up and pressing and holding the Home button until it quits.
