Jailbreak iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad

There is no official jailbreak utility for iOS 4.0.1. However you can still jailbreak and unlock iPhone 3G. Just do the following:

• Download the latest RedSn0w 0.9.5-b5 in our utilities page here.
• Download firmware images for iOS 4.0 here.
• Run RedSn0w and point it at the 4.0 IPSW. (Yes – point it at the 4.0 IPSW even though you’re at 4.0.1). This will also hacktivate your iPhone3G at 4.0.1 if you haven’t already been activated by iTunes.
• Install ultrasn0w in Cydia (add repository http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com) if you need a carrier unlock (and in the USA, remember to turn off 3G mode in Settings→General→Network).

by the way, there is absolutely no reason to update to 4.0.1. it only improves the formula for _displaying bars_, not actual signal

Geohot closed the iPhone blog that he used to announce and release jailbreaks and unlocks over the past few years. The site now says “This blog is open to invited readers only”. Yesterday he posted his last public blog entry.

Geohot has also now shut down his Twitter account which has 113,761 followers. Visiting the account now says “This person has protected their tweets”.

His last messages are:

Last Geohot’s post on his blog reveals that he will not release any new tool for jailbreak or unlock in the near future. Moreover, he said that he misses those old days, when jailbreaking was a hard work to do:

I miss when this blog was actually about technical things (I’ve been reacting too much to the feedback, which led it to the place it’s in now). I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.

The real reason behind no release isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd.

Many people have immediately started to buzz that it may be an indication of Geohot’s retirement. Other decided that it is just some kind of a trick and the picture above is not a fake indeed. Hope they’re right.

MuscleNerd, famous hacker from DevTeam, has announced via Twitter that an upcoming comex release will jailbreak all 4.0 devices. This will include latest iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, new iPod Touch and iPad.

jailbreak for all devices at 4.0 is already handled by upcoming @comex release so, good time for iphone4 unlock stuff

Comex is also well-known, he authored the 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 jailbreak called Spirit. He’s also recently demonstrated Frash, an upcoming release of Flash for the iPhone and iPad.

iH8Sn0w has successfully performed a tethered jailbreak for iPhone 3GS with new firmware  iOS 4 and the new bootrom. Unfortunately this jailbreak requires users to have 3.1.2 SHSH blobs saved.

Alright… If anyone has their 3.1.2 SHSH blobs, NOT 3.1.3. Then I’ll see if I can produce a tool that will do this job…

The utility will be available soon. Might be as soon as tomorrow.

DevTeam updated iOS 4 jailbreak utility redsn0w to version 0.9.5b5-5. That should fix any APN or MMS issues that users were seeing. It’s safe to re-run it on an already jailbroken iPhone without restoring. Just deselect “Install Cydia” if you do that.

Supported devices are still only iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G (not MC)

Congratulations to all iPhone users. iPhone 4 has been successfully jailbroken. iPhone hackers @planetbeing and @chpwn has managed to get root access on the device using @comex’s userland jailbreak method. However do not expect new jailbreak utility soon. @p0sixninja has confirmed that it cant be released in its current shape because it contains some of Apple’s proprietary code:

You should not expect the carrier unlock soon too. This is because iPhone 4 uses a new baseband OS, which will require a complete rewrite for ultrasn0w unlocking tool:

The DevTeam and others have been checking through the iPhone 4, and have noticed the baseband runs a completely different OS than on previous models. The iPhone 3G and 3G[S] both ran Nucleus OS on the PMB8878 baseband CPU (aka XGold 608), where the iPhone 2G ran the PMB8876 (aka S-Gold 2). iPhone 4 uses the PMB9800, or X-Gold 618 – running a separate OS – ThreadX, an RTOS by ExpressLogic.

DevTeam released update to their PwnageTool jailbreak utility. New version 4.01 supports iOS 4 jailbreak for iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G (non-MC).
