purplera1n1 Purplera1n: iPhone 3GS jailbreak by GeoHot

Geohot released a beta software for iPhone 3GS jailbreak called PurpleRa1n. It is beta and has some issues, but it gets the job done if you’re patient.

Requirements: You must have
1) Windows xp sp2, Vista, Windows 7, MAC OS
2) iTunes 8.2.0.23
3) Purplera1n software

The jailbreak is a bit incomplete. The kernel vm_mem patch is not present so Winterboard will not work as some other critical tweaks. (SBSettings does work!).

Use with caution and be patient. If you’re not in a hurry, wait for the release from DevTeam.

unlock Ultrasn0w: iPhone 3G Unlock for firmware 3.0 is ready

DevTeam released Ultrasn0wapplication that will unlock your iPhone 3G with firmware 3.0. Here are the instructions:

  1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0
  2. Jailbreak your iPhone using redsn0w (this will also install Cydia)
  3. Run Cydia
  4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com to Cydia. That last “o” is actually the number zero “0”! If you use the letter “o” you’ll get an error.
  5. Search for ‘ultrasn0w’ in cydia or icy and install ultrasn0w
  6. Reboot your iPhone 3G
  7. T-Mobile USA users should disable 3G before using ultrasn0w
  8. Enjoy

redsn0w 375x400 Firmware 3.0 jailbreak: RedSn0w for iPhone and iPod Touch

RedSn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool from DevTeam. It supports firmware 3.0 and iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation):

  • iPhone 2G – jailbreak and unlock
  • iPhone 3G – only jailbreak, use only with official unlocked iPhones (UPDATE: unlock is avaliable)
  • iPod Touch – jailbreak
  • iPod Touch 2G – jailbreak
  • iPod Touch 3GS – not supported (UPDATE: is supported by version 0.8)

Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X. The tool works just like QuickPwn. If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use PwnageTool on Mac OS X.

  1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
  2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon (update: released), Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
  3. Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.
  4. Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.
  5. At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the latest version of redsn0w.
  6. This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
  7. redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.
  8. redsn0w WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch, iPod touch 2G and the iPhone 3G (not the iPhone 3GS).

To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)

You can donwload RedSn0w 0.7 here.

30 iPhone OS 3.0 released

iPhone OS 3.0 is now available. Update via iTunes (you need 8.2) or download here. Firmwares are avaliable for all devices: iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch and iPod Touch 2G. Here is a link to official Apple site about this upgrade.

Do not upgrade if you want jailbreak and/or unlock. Just wait for DevTeam to release their software.

itunes iTunes 8.2 released

Apple released iTunes 8.2. You can download it here.

This update breaks your ability to use QuickPwn, PwnageTool, and iPhone Tunneling Suite (ssh over usb). Many file managers do not work with iTunes 8.2 installed. We don’t think this is a deliberate breakage of these tools.  It’s just that Apple has updated a low-level USB protocol. It may also break Palm Pre’s connection to the device.

So if you jailbreak, we recommend you not to update.

AppStore and iTunes are great. But when we want other useful apps we jailbreak and run Cydia. Some use Installer, others prefer Icy. Here is a demonstration of new app to install 3-rd party apps called Kryptes:

iphonepaper iPhones Wallpaper with notes and calendar events [AppStore, Free]

Wallpaper Labeler (AppStore link) and gCalWall Lite (AppStore link) let you add appointments and notes to the home screen. With Wallpaper Labeler, you can enter any text you want to your wallpaper, so you can leave yourself (or whoever finds your phone) notes. The other app, gCalWall, pulls down upcoming appointments from your default Google Calendar and splays them all over your home screen. You have to update it manually, which is kind of a drag, but the dev says that iPhone API won’t allow for automatic updating. Both apps are free :-)

In the past you could only use Intelliscreen paid app on a jailbreaked iPhone.

emojifun Enable Emoji for free via AppStore App

Emoji, emoticons and pictorial characters popular in the Japanese instant messaging culture, were introduced to Japanese customers as part of the iPhone 2.2 Firmware update, but have required workarounds to be enabled for non-Japanese users. There are many solutins to turn Emiji Icons (Get Emoji Icons for free), but the easy one required jailbreaking. Recently Apple approved an application that simplifies this process. App is called EmotiFun and it is free (AppStore link).

Everything is simple: get app, run it, exit and go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese and enable.

alt Firmware 2.2.1 is officially hacked

Yes, DevTeam released new version of their software. First of all, please, do NOT use unofficial software from unknows sites (f.e. quickpwm.com). We recommend to download from torrent or official mirors.

We regulary publish latets software and firmware links. Use them or the same ones from DevTeam site.

So:

  • iPhone 2G and iPod Touch: update to 2.2.1 with iTunes and run QuickPwn to jailbreak, activate and unlock you device.
  • iPod Touch 2G: sorry, you need to wait a bit more
  • iPhone 3G + NO UNLOCK: If you do not need unlock, you are using your iPhone with one carrier or you hae factory unlcoked iPhone, just restore or upgrade to 2.2.1 using iTunes and use QuickPwn to jailbreak and add Cydia and Installer.
  • iPhone 3G + UNLOCK: you need to preserve current baseband software. Preserving the baseband will ensure that you can still use “yellowsn0w” the iPhone 3G unlock application. To upgrade your phone to 2.2.1 and preserve the state of the baseband you need to create a custom .ipsw with PwnageTool. This custom .ipsw will not contain the baseband update but of course will still allow all the cool new stuff from 2.2.1. PwnageTool is only available for Mac OS X.

DevTeam updated yellowsn0w to version 0.9.7 to work with modified (!!!) firmware 2.2.1, in which you preserve old baseband from firmware 2.2.

itsemojiohyes Get Emoji Icons for free

First of all these icons can be viewed on any iPhone with 2.2 firmware. But to be able to send these icons users need to perform additional actions. There are 4 ways to turn them on and 2 of them are free:

Solution N1 for $5.99:

In AppStore buy and install Touch Dial Emoji. Goto Settings -> Touch Dial -> Enable Smiley icon ON. Launch Touch Dial. Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese and enable “Emoji.”

Solution N2 for $0.99:

In AppStore buy and install FrostyPlace. Play with the app for a minute to activate, click on a story, etc. Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese and enable “Emoji.”

Solution N3 for Free:

Jailbreak your iPhone. Run Cydia and install Emoji application (iSpazio repository). Go to Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards -> Japanese and enable “Emoji.”

This application adds boolean ‘true’ key KeyboardEmojiEverywhere edits in /User/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preferences.plist. You can do it manually if you want.

Solution N3 for Free:

Step 1. Download the vcard.vcf here.
Step 2. Import it to your address book program. If you are using Windows, you may want to do it on iPhone directly. Send the vcard.vcf file to yourself. Open in on iPhone’s Email.app, click the vcf file and import all the contacts.
Step 3. Go into “Settings” > “General” > “Keyboard” > “Japanese Keyboard”. Enable the QWERTY keyboard.
Step 4. In notes or any other program you want. Type “emojia”, “emojii” or “emojiu” to select those :) icons.

I like Solution N3. It is free and simple. You do not need to play with contacts and etc. But you need to jailbreak an iPhone.
