ultrasn0w 0.93 released! Cydia repo is repo666.ultrasn0w.com. Works with basebands 04.26.08 thru 05.13.04

This means, that all users with basebands 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01 and 05.13.04 can use ultrasn0w 0.93.

piracy 400x300 App Piracy on the iPhone statistics

Pinch Media has shared some data they presented at 360iDev on the state of app piracy on the iPhone, and there are a few key take-aways:

  • These analytics show roughly 4 million jailbreak devices, 38% of which are using pirated app(s) (aka cracked apps).
  • Piracy is highest in China, Russia, and Brazil, with Europe and Canada being the mid-ground, and the USA, Great Britain, and Japan having the lowest rates.
  • Of paid apps that use Pinch Media’s services, 60% have been pirated.
  • Of those pirated apps, 34% of all installs are the pirated version.
  • Like legitimate app downloads, pirated apps are used a lot at first, but drop off quickly (more quickly than legitimate app usage, in fact).
  • Pirated apps on jailbroken iPhones crash more, which may be why they’re used less.
  • Those who claim to use pirated apps as a way to “try before they buy” are full of it. While 7.4% of legitimate “Lite” app downloads up-convert to the paid version, only 0.43% of pirated apps lead to purchase of the legitimate paid version.

jailbreak The number of jailbreaked iPhones grows

The latest statistics provided by PinchMedia show that, despite the statements from Apple’s official website, the phenomenon of Jailbreak is increasing.

In a single week in fact, it has gone from 8% to 8,43%. This is a small percentage which probably expresses the disappointment of users faced with some decisions of Apple, such as the refusal of the application Google Voice.

iphone pirate 2 243x300 DevTeam about firmware 2.2

DevTeam says that 2.2 update SHOULD NOT be applied using iTunes if you want the chance of a soft-unlock in the near future. Use new version of PwnageTool (not avaliable yet, but will be soon).

Some fact:

  • The 2.2 firmware for 3G contains a baseband update for the 3G iPhone
  • The 2.2 firmware for 2G (1st gen iPhones) doesn’t contain a baseband update and the baseband is still at 04.05.04
  • Pwnage technique (and therefore the Jailbreak) isn’t affected, but PwnageTool and QuickPwn do not support this release as yet, so DO NOT install 2.2 using iTunes as you will lose your jailbreak
  • If you apply this update and you previously relied on PwnageTool or QuickPwn to activate your phone, it may become temporarily deactivated and unusable (until we release the new version of PwnageTool or QuickPwn).
  • PwnageTool and QuickPwn updates will be released as soon as possible that will allow a safe update path to 2.2 the release of these updates is inevitable but not imminent, we are creating the modifications right now and we need to put the new software through the usual testing process.
  • If you apply this update and you have third-party (non AppStore) applications from Cydia and Installer that you rely on they will stop working.
  • 2G (1st gen) iPhone users who cannot wait for the new PwnageTool or QuickPwn can safely “Update” to 2.2 using iTunes, this will preserve the existing activation. However “restoring” to 2.2 using iTunes will return the iPhone to the unactivated state. If you are in any doubt just wait. NB: This works for 2G ONLY.
  • The use of SIM-Proxies (small circuit boards/chips that sit underneath the SIM card) to provide GSM/UMTS service on your locked iPhone 3G: early reports suggest that the 2.2 update disables the functionality of these devices.

Download iTunes

Many iPhone 3G users would like to use internet on a desktop or notebook through their phone. There were several solutions: iPhoneModem, NetShare, 3Proxy.. they all used SSH and SOCKS proxy. One of the working ones was described here get internet on a desktop or notebook through IPhone 3G.

Couple days ago PdaNet (fullname is PdaNet WiFi Router) was ported to iPhone. Now our life is much much easier.

pdanet Connect desktop or notebook to internet through iPhone 3G

What you need is a jailbreaked iPhone with Cydia installer. Then install PdaNet.

All you need to do is simply to create an ad-hoc WiFi network on the computer and connect your iPhone to it (instructions). Your computer then goes online automatically. There is no need to specify IP (or any other) settings on either end.

Some nice features:

  • You will get FULL Internet access on the computer! (Instead of only applications that support Socks proxy.) In technical terms, all applications make direct TCP/IP connections to the server. Since there is no proxy involved, that also means less problems and less delays.
  • You don’t need to configure anything on the computer end whenever you connect PdaNet. No proxy settings, no extra software installation, no messing with static IP assignment, no switching settings back and forth when going back to your home’s WiFi router.
  • Yes it will connect at 3G speed if your phone has the coverage.
  • Supports PC, MAC, Linux or anything (include other PDA/phones) that connects to a WiFi router.
  • PdaNet runs in the background so you can still use other iPhone features when PdaNet is connected. But when you are done with them, go back to PdaNet to prevent the phone from entering idle and drops your connection.
  • To turn off the phone screen when using PdaNet, just cover the upper part of the phone (or simply flip the phone upside down). This will conserve your battery.
  • It is recommended that you charge the phone at the same time while using PdaNet, because both WiFi and 3G will be put on full speed, both consume a lot of juice.

One last note: over-usage of PdaNet’s tethering is likely to draw the eye and the ire of AT&T (if you use this provider), so use with care!
